Honored Alum Award - Michael L. Hutchings - 1989


Michael L. Hutchings practices law with the law firm of Hutchings Baird & Jones PLLC in Sandy, Utah. He practices law in the area of real estate development and represents some of Utah's largest development companies.

Michael is a retired Third District Court Judge having served for 15 years on the Utah state trial court bench between 1983 and 1998. During his tenure, he served on many community boards and task forces including three years on the state Judicial Council and thirteen years on the Editorial Board of the Utah Bar Journal.

Before being appointed to the bench, he served for three years as a city attorney for West Valley City. Earlier, he served as an Associate Attorney for the law firm of Senior and Senior in Salt Lake City.

He graduated from the J. Reuben Clark Law School in 1979. While in law school he served as member of the BYU Law Review and served as a Teaching Fellow.

He has served as a trustee of the Mormon Historic Sites Foundation since 1993 and has been involved in a number of restoration and preservation projects of the foundation including Ensign Peak, historic Kirtland Village, Hauns Mill, Far West Cemetery, the exhibit on Mormon migration at the Steamboat Arabia Museum in Kansas City, Missouri, the City Park at Lexington, Missouri honoring the Mormon immigrants on the steamboat Saluda, and many other projects.

He is married to the former Martha Shill and has nine children.
