Honored Alum Award - M. Gay Taylor - 1995


Work Experience

Ms. Taylor has served as General Counsel to the Utah Legislature from 1985 to present.
She is in her 3rd 6 year term of appointment in this nonpartisan position with the Utah Legislature.
She serves in the Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel.

Her primary responsibilities include:

  • Managing and supervising 14 attorneys
  • Assigning requests for legislation from legislators to attorneys
  • Serving as legal counsel to the Legislature, its majority and minority leadership, its committees, its professional staff offices, and individual members of the Legislature, including representing them in litigation in state and federal court
  • Acting as the revisor of statutes
  • Responding to requests for legal information from legislators
  • Assisting in the preparation of all formal legal opinions for legislators

Ms. Taylor was an Associate General Counsel to the Utah Legislature from 1983 to 1985; and she was an associate with the law firm of Greene, Callister & Nebeker from 1980 to 1983.


Education

Ms. Taylor received her Juris Doctor from J. Reuben Clark Law School, Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah in 1980, where she was:

  • Cum Laude
  • Order of Barristers
  • Outstanding Oral Advocate in First Year Moot Court Competition
  • Director of Editing for Board of Advocates (Moot Court Program)
  • Honored Alumni Award, J. Reuben Clark Law School, 1995

She graduated Summa Cum Laude with her Master of Science in Family and Human Development from Utah State University, Logan, Utah in 1975.

She also received her Bachelor of Arts in English with French and History minors from Utah State University, Logan, Utah 1974 where she was:
